Formulation is the ability to bring together different raw materials or ingredients into a given composition or formula that has a specific function. Formulation is a challenge for hair color formulas due to the reactive chemistry of the dyes. The dyes are the components that give hair color formulas, whether a paste or a liquid, the ability to color human hair into various shades and depths. These small dyes are aromatic rings (I know this a fun organic chemistry term!) that react with other dyes to form large compounds that will ultimately enter the cortex of the hair.
